The Capitol Dome

The Dome atop the United States Capitol was a fitting finale for such a building, which kept growing and evolving. The first rendition of the dome was completed in 1824, after 30 years of construction. However, by the 1850’s it was decidedly too small as congress began to grow, and it was also extremely fire hazardous.
The new structure would require over 5 million pounds built on top of the rotunda walls for the columns to be placed, reaching 287 feet. Construction was halted for a brief period in 1861 as Union troops used it as a hospital and barracks, but was picked back up a year later. In 1863, the last section of the Statue of Freedom was put atop the dome, and the final details of the iron-cast dome as we know it were completed by 1865.
