Modern science fiction, George Lucas is your father. After introducing audiences to a galaxy far, far away more than 40 years ago with the film Star Wars in 1977, Lucas changed the landscape of sci-fi films, television and media in general for years to come. But the creative spark for comedic robots, complex spaceships and donut-designed hairdos didn’t come from nowhere.

Lucas drew from several inspirations, including the 1958 Japanese adventure film The Hidden Fortress and actual historical events like World War II, in order to create a vast universe with the breadth to span decades of development on the silver screen.
