In a This Day in History video, learn that on July 3, 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg came to a bloody end. It was the third day of battle between Robert E. Lee's 70,000 confederate troops and General George Meade's 93,000 union soldiers. Lee wanted a victory on Northern soil but couldn't break the Union troops he'd attacked; therefore, Lee commissioned Pickett's charge and attacked Union troops at the center. This attack was anticipated, and in less than an hour, thousands of rebel soldiers were shot down; more than 9,000 soldiers were dead and Lee retreated.
