On this day in 1994, a 22-year-old Texas A&M University student and born-again Christian named Ronald Shamburgerkills Lori Ann Baker, a young woman whom he had briefly dated. Shamburger broke into Baker's College Station home as he had on several prior occasions, and was surprised to find Baker home and asleep. He shot her when he heard her roommate enter the house, killing her instantly.
Shamburger was then discovered by Baker's roommate, whom he tied up. Asked if she could identify him, the roommate lied and said no, so Shamburger put her in the trunk of his car. He then drove a few blocks away and returned to the scene to remove the bullet from Baker's head.
Shamburger then set fire to Baker'shouse in an attempt to destroy the evidence, but realized that he had left his car keys inside. He surrendered to police outside the burning home. At his trial in 1995, he was sentenced to death. Prosecutors also noted that in the months prior to the murder, he had committed a string of burglaries. Shamburger was executed by lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas, on Sept. 18, 2002.
